Nintama RantarouNintama Rantarou

In March of 2004, I visited Iga-Ueno City in Mie Prefecture. Iga is best known as an ancestral home of ninja in Japan. They have a ninja house and museum which have a number of interesting exhibits. One day, I hope to make a webpage about my visit to this wonderful city. For now, I wanted to at least get this special gallery up on my cels page. For in the gift shop at the ninja museum there is something that made my heart skip a beat. Cels. Anime cels from Nintama Rantarou. Unfortunately, the cels are not for sale, and even more unfortunately they aren't at all protected from uv radiation and light that have taken their toll over the years on the lines of the cels. But there are some very interesting and unusual characters and scenes included here, so I took pictures.

cels at Iga-Ueno

The cels are on two walls, framed, with a description on the lower left about what a cel is and how it was used in the animation process. In this first picture, the most interesting of the cels is the really sweet Ooki-sensei cel in the lower left. Oh, how I would love to have that cel. The cel in the upper left is also really neat - Rantarou in women's clothes. Even in these photographs, you can see how bad the line fading is.

In this photo you can see a couple of really great cels of Hieta Happousai and the Dokutake Ninja. But my favorite, the one cel that I crave above all others, Rikichi! They have a Rikichi cel! He's there, in the upper right corner.

These are the cels on the other wall. There are a lot of really nice kunoichi cels, especially Tomomi.

me and the cels

I wasn't sure if I really wanted to put this picture, but finally decided, what the heck, why not. The ladies at the gift shop offered to take my picture with the cels. So this is me. I look terrible, but I'm surrounded by Nintama goodness so who can complain?
