Nenga
The leader of the Nenga school of ninja is Nenga, a large bear. He has amazing powers and seems to be pretty wise, but he also has some weird quirks. For one thing, he likes to give names to things. Simple names. Names that are easy to remember. He also likes to give Pocky to people.

Manmaru
Manmaru is a penguin who was brought to Nenga by Jiya-san in order to become a ninja. He's not very strong, fast, or agile, but he seems to have surprisingly strong powers. Manmaru is just a kid, and he sees the world through very innocent eyes. He doesn't understand why everyone can't just be friends and enjoy life. He loves origami, elephants, and playing soccer. He's also very cute. ^_^

Tanutaro
Tanutaro is one of Nenga's students. He's a tanuki. He's got a very short temper and gets frustrated easily. He likes arguing and deciding how dumb other people are with Tsunejiro (on the dobe-scale). In the anime he's got a crush on Mamiko-chan, Jiya-san's granddaughter.

Tsunejiro
Tsunejiro is Nenga's other student. He's a kitsune (fox). He likes mending clothes and assessing the level of other people's stupidity with Tanutaro. He's also terribly afraid of dark, enclosed places - he curles up into a fetal position sucking his thumb and crying "kurai semai kowaii" (it's dark, it's small, it's scary).

Nennen
Nennen is a living piece of clay. It's Manmaru's pet/friend, and can change its shape into almost anything. Nennen sometimes plays with Manmaru, enveloping him and making him look like a tiny elephant.
