The Music of Nintama Rantarou

Nintama Rantarou: Nintama Theme Song Collection PCCA-00943, 96-6-5, Pony Canyon
|
This CD has some of the same songs as the soundtracks. It's a good CD to get if you can't get the first soundtrack. This was the first Nintama Rantarou CD I bought. And actually, I really like the song Sing!! and the orchestral version of Yuuki 100% (you've gotta love that song - if you don't, you will by the time you listen to all the soundtracks)

Nintama Rantarou: Nintama Family Daishuukai (Big Get-together) PCCA-00944, 96-6-5, Pony Canyon "Nintama Family" cast:
Rantarou: Takayama Minami |
This CD was released at the same time as both the one above, and is a perfect companion CD. While the CD above features the main themes, this one features many character vocals. But the best thing included on this CD is the Dancing Junk Nintama Up Version, which is probably as close as you can get to the feel of the original ending credits.

Nintama Rantarou: Nintama Daiundokai PCCR-00205, 96-6-5, Pony Canyon
|
This CD is almost (but not quite!) as strange as the Hemuhemu Classics CD below. This CD has no vocal tracks. Nor is it backgroud music from the tv show. It consists of several "adaptations" of the main themes from Nintama Rantarou, specifically intended to be used as bgm during a school undokai, or athletic festival. Japanese schools hold these sports festivals every year. It starts with a parade of athletes around the field, followed by not only the actual athletic events, but also by a (very formal) cheering contest, finally ending with the award to the winning group and closing ceremony. Listening to this CD, I could definitely imagine an elementary school using some of this as background music during the ceremonies and events.

Nintama Rantarou: Hemuhemu no Classic Nyuumon (Hemuhemu's Intro Guide to the Classics) PCCG-00444, 98-2-18, Pony Canyon
|
This is, without question, one of the weirdest CDs I've ever bought. Are you familiar with the CDs featuring dogs and cats recorded on a sythesizer, barking and meowing Christmas carols? This CD features synthesized classical music with Hemuhemu's "voice" singing along. "Hemu hemu hemu hemuuu, hemu hemu hemu. . . .." It's scary. It's also amusing, in a bizarre sort of way. I admit that I'm not all that familiar with all these songs, and I don't know the correct spelling of some of the composers. If you can help out, let me know! I'll give you full credit. ^_^ The main reasons to buy this CD are 1. for the gorgeous jacket art (shame there's only a couple of pictures though), 2. for the card that comes with it (see above), with room to write your school schedule on the back and instructions on how to draw Hemuhemu on the front, and 3. for the bonus track 11, a version of Hemuhemu's theme from the anime.

Nintama Rantarou: Nintama Super Best Theme Shuu (Collection) PCCG-00482, 99-3-3, Pony Canyon
|
This CD is a compilation of CD singles. It includes a more upbeat version of Dancing Junk than on the first soundtrack (but it's still a different track than the first ending credits version), and a few other tracks that I hadn't heard before (Memory & Melody and Itsudatte Yell). Because it's so recent, it's much easier to find this CD than some of the older soundtracks, so this might be a good purchase if you only want one CD. It's also nice that it has 14 tracks where all the others only have 10 or 11. I just wish the cover wasn't so ugly.

Nintama Rantarou: Zoku (Continued) Nintama Family Daishuukai (Big Get-together) Best Selection PCCG-00498, 99-6-17, Pony Canyon "Nintama Family" cast:
Rantarou: Takayama Minami |
This cd is like a companion cd to the above theme song best collection. This is the Nintama Family vocal best collection. It also contains songs that were on other albums, but fortunately it also has some new songs too!! Some of the new songs are what I would call "image songs" for certain characters. The first one, Kaizoku no Uta, is obviously for Daisankyoeimaru, Rantarou-tachi's pirate friend. The second, Komatta Komatsuda, is probably my favorite. But that's because I love Komatsuda, so any song about him is cool! And another, Rikichi no Theme, is actually a really pretty song. All in all, if you like character vocals and image songs, this CD is well worth buying. Another ugly cover, unfortunately, and surprisingly there are no pictures of either Daisan-kyoeimaru, Komatsuda, or Rikichi. :-P
